Room 304 – Sibyl

The Cumana Sibyl was one of Apollo’s most important priestesses, recognized above all for her prophetic gifts.

She used to perform her activity near Lake Avernus, in a cave known as the “Antro della Sibilla”.

Here the priestess, inspired by the divinity, would begin to transcribe her prophecies into hexameters on palm leaves, which, at the end of the prediction, would be mixed by the winds coming from the hundred openings of the cavern, making the “sibylline” predictions, therefore more difficult to understand.
